Technical Details

I acquired this eight new on eBay from Kris Steele in 2008.

The Advanced Base Camp is milled from aluminum plate and then soft anodized. Mine is 174 mm. tall, 171 mm. wide, and 13 mm. thick. The rope hole is 75 mm. high and 75 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 13 mm. The shaft length and width are 52 mm. and 44 mm., respectively. The auxiliary hole is 19 mm. high and 19 mm. wide. The eye measures 21 mm. by 30 mm. The ears are 34 mm. long. My Advanced Base Camp weighs 242 g.

The front of the shaft is stamped with the Advanced Base Camp logo (ABC inside a carabiner).

Comments

The Advanced Base Camp is a typical example of a milled aluminum rescue eight. Like all rescue eights, this one is too large and heavy for my taste. It could have been more versatile if the auxiliary hole had been replaced by a belay slot. I also think that the ears are much longer than they need to be - and of course they are in the wrong place, like "everyone" else’s.

This eight is virtually identical to the Rock & Rescue eight that I got from John Weinel in 1991. I'm not sure why I never saw another eight with this design in the intervening 17 years.
