Handled Eccentric Cam Ascenders
Milled Frame

This section includes mechanical ascenders consisting of a shell or frame and an eccentric cam assembly attached to the shell/frame at a single pivot point. The shell/frame is open on one side to allow admittance of the standing rope. The shell/frame below the cam is enlarged to provide a handle. No sling attachment points are provided on the cam.

These ascenders are generally larger and heavier than the handleless eccentric cam ascenders; conversely, they are easier to manipulate, particularly with gloved hands. I don't normally wear gloves while ascending (except in cold conditions), but many people prefer to do so.

I split the Handled Eccentric Cam Ascenders into these four groups:

Most milled frame ascenders made by milling an aluminum extrusion. This process can yield extremely rugged ascenders, and I prefer them in harsh environments. The extrusion process limits the possible shapes for the handle, and so these ascenders are often less comfortable than their cast frame cousins. Some extruded frame ascenders are quite heavy, but others, especially the Kong Futura, are quite light.

In the ID column and chart, I used a red background for cast-frame ascenders, green for milled-frame ascenders, and blue for stamped-frame ascenders. Magenta indicates a two-rope ascender.
