Overview

History

Boris Rogelja founded Single Rope Technique Equipment (SRTE) in 1980. Capital Safety Group acquired SRTE in 2011 and their devices started showing DBI-SALA, Capital Safety, and/or Rollgliss™ markings. 3M acquired the Capital Safety Group in 2015 and the Single Rope Technique Equipment markings disappeared.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Single Rope Technique Equipment in 2000.

The Single Rope Technique Equipment R8Sa is milled from aluminum alloy plate and then hard anodized. Mine is 135 mm. tall, 119 mm wide, and 12 mm. thick. The rope hole is 47 mm. high and 53 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. The shaft length and width are 44 mm. and 36 mm., respectively. The auxiliary hole is 8 mm. high and 8 mm. wide. The eye measures 20 mm. by 25 mm. The ears are 21.5 mm. long. My Single Rope Technique Equipment R8Sa weighs 157 g.

The front of the eight has a stamped circle containing "RESCUE 8," the SRT logo, and "4000 kg."

Comments

Although SRT calls the R8Sa a "Rescue 8," in my classification it is an almost perfect example of a "midi" size figure eights with ears. The auxiliary hole is too small to accept a carabiner. I suspect it is just an alignment hole used during manufacturing, since I see no practical field use for it.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Single Rope Technique Equipment in 2000.

The Single Rope Technique Equipment R8La is milled from aluminum alloy and then hard anodized. Mine is 176 mm. tall, 159 mm wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 68 mm. high and 73 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 16 mm. The shaft length and width are 57 mm. and 44 mm., respectively. The auxiliary slot is 36.2 mm. high and 16.2 mm. wide. The eye measures 25 mm. by 30 mm. The ears are 27.5 mm. long. My Single Rope Technique Equipment R8La eight weighs 311 g.

The front of the R8La has a stamped circle containing "RESCUE 8," the SRT logo, and "4000 kg."

Comments

The Single Rope Technique Equipment R8La is a typical example of a milled aluminum rescue eight. Like all rescue eights, this one is too large and heavy for my taste. The belay slot is larger than normal for an 11 mm Sticht slot, but could suit the hawsers used by the "bigger is better" crowd.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from On Rope in 2004. On Rope is an Australian company, not to be confused with On Rope 1 in the USA.

The Single Rope Technique Equipment R8B is milled from aluminum alloy and then hard anodized. Mine is 172 mm. tall, 92 mm. wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 51 mm. high and 51 mm wide. The top center thickness is 16 mm. The shaft length and width are 66 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 28 mm. by 28 mm. The ears are 24 and 9.7 mm long. My Single Rope Technique Equipment R8B eight weighs 296 g.

The front of the eight has a stamped circle containing "RESCUE 8," the SRT logo, and "4000 kg." The rear has a sticker with "SINGLE ROPE TECHNIQUE EQUIPMENT," "RESCUE ROPING," a drawing of a person rappelling a gentle slope, and "SRT AUSTRALIA." The rear is also stamped with "19914700."

Comments

The Single Rope Technique Equipment R8B is a modified harpoon. It is similar to the Rescue Belay 8 R8Ba, but adds small ears that come into play (somewhat) when used as a normal eight. Both eights are similar in shape to the Spelean Harpoon, and are used the same way (i.e., as Longhorns). All harpoons are too large and heavy for my taste.

The Single Rope Technique Equipment R8B is a typical harpoon. This eight is similar in shape to the Spelean Harpoon, and is used the same way (i.e., as a Longhorn). All harpoons are too large and heavy for my taste.
