Technical Details

I acquired this eight from John E. Weinel, Inc. in 1990.

This eight is cut from aluminum alloy plate. It is 98 mm. tall, 82 mm. wide, and 11 mm. thick. The rope hole is 41 mm. high and 41 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 10 mm. The shaft length and width are 19 mm and 39 mm., respectively. The eye measures 22 mm. by 20 mm. The ears are 24.5 and 23.1 mm. long. This eight weighs 86 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This eight is tiny, and probably too small for general use on 11 mm. caving rope, but it works all right on smaller ropes. The tie-off horns are hooked to help hold the rope better. The eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners. This eight may be hand made.

I classified this one as a T–side eight.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight on eBay from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2024.

This eight is milled from aluminum alloy plate. It is 86 mm. tall, 80 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. The rope hole is 41 mm. high and 41 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 10 mm. The shaft length and width are 8 mm. and 33 mm., respectively. The eye measures 19 mm. by 19 mm. The ears are 22.6 and 29.6 mm. long. This eight weighs 66 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This eight is nearl;y identical to Version C, except the horns are longer and the eight is not anodiuzed.

I classified this one as a T–side eight.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from John E. Weinel, Inc in 1991.

This eight is milled from aluminum alloy plate and then soft anodized. It is 85 mm. tall, 79 mm. wide, and 11 mm. thick. The rope hole is 40 mm. high and 40 mm wide. The top center thickness is 10 mm. The shaft length and width are 8 mm. and 34 mm., respectively. The eye measures 18 mm. by 18 mm. The ears are 19.4 and 22 mm long. This eight weighs 64 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This eight is tiny, and probably too small for general use on 11 mm. caving rope, but it works all right on smaller ropes. The shaft is too short, so the rope has to run over the carabiner. The tie-off horns are rather small, and the rope can come off them easily. The eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners.

I classified this one as a T–side eight.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2023.

This eight is machined from aluminum alloy plate. It is 128 mm. tall, 115 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. The rope hole is 66 mm. high and 66 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 10 mm. The shaft length and width are 22 mm. and 28 mm., respectively. The eye measures 18 mm. by 18 mm. The ears are 44.7 and 52.1 mm. long. This eight weighs 145 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This is another T–side eight. It is milled, with a rotary table used to round the upper ring and the curved sections of the horns and slots. The inside of the rope hole appears to have been rounded on a lathe. The interior and exterior of the eye are neither rounded nor chamfered. These have sharp burrs that should be removed before use.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Serguei Khramtsov of Ural Sport in 2004. This is not a Ural Sport product, but Serguei made a special shopping trip through Yekaterinburg for me.

This eight is forged from aluminum alloy and then painted. It is 155 mm. tall, 115 mm. wide, and 15 mm. thick. The rope hole is 50 mm. high and 66 mm wide. The top center thickness is 14 mm. The shaft length and width are 43 mm. and 34 mm., respectively. The eye measures 20 mm. by 20 mm. The ears are 36.7 and 36.4 mm long. This eight weighs 189 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

Aside from the side ears, the shape of this eight is relatively normal, with a large oval rope hole and a round eye. The ears are large enough to provide a moderately secure tie-off, provided one’s rope is not too stiff. I think that the eye is too small: it will not admit two carabiners unless they are particularly small. I also dislike the painted finish, since this will simply wear off, leaving a mess on the rope.

I classified this one as a T–side eight.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2022.

This eight is hand-cut from aluminum alloy plate. It is 149 mm. tall, 92 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. The rope hole is 83 mm. high and 38 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 10 mm. The shaft length and width are 24 mm. and 34 mm., respectively. The eye measures 15 mm. by 15 mm. The ears are 42.3 and 36.4 mm. long. This eight weighs 146 g.The eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This is another T–side eight. It is hand-cut and rather crude. There was no attempt to round the edges of the eight - they were not even deburred. I'd recommend taking a file or deburring wheel to the edges before using it.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2023.

This eight is hand-cut from aluminum alloy plate. It is 140 mm. tall, 121 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. The rope hole is 66 mm. high and 65 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 10 mm. The shaft length and width are 9 mm. and - mm., respectively. The eye measures 15 mm. by 15 mm. The ears are 43.5 and 45.6 mm. long. This eight weighs 154 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

I grouped this with the other T–side eights, although its lack of a distinct shaft could argue for calling this a rappel plate instead of an eight.

This eight is hand-cut and rather crude. The lack of a distinct shaft prevents using this one in a standard eight configuration, requiring the free-running mode instead. The T-horns are placed unusually high on this eight, and I think that this is undesirable. While tying off, the rope can easily slip off the top of the eight before the tie-off is complete.

I acquired this eight from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2023.

This eight is hand-cut from aluminum alloy plate. It is 185 mm. tall, 126 mm. wide, and 13 mm. thick. The rope hole is 85 mm. high and 54 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 13 mm. The shaft length and width are 15 mm. and - mm., respectively. The eye measures 16 mm. by 16 mm. The ears are 63.9 and 66.2 mm. long. This eight weighs 477 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

I grouped this with the other T–side eights, although its lack of a distinct shaft and extra eye could argue for calling this a rappel plate instead of an eight.

It is hand-cut and rather crude. It is also huge and massive for an eight. Only someone from the bigger-is-better crowd would want to carry this one.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from John E. Weinel, Inc. in 1996.

This eight is milled out of plate steel. It is 118 mm. tall, 101 mm. wide, and 8 mm. thick. The rope hole is 40 mm high and 43 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 8 mm. The shaft length and width are 41 mm. and 16 mm., respectively. The eye measures 16 mm. by 16 mm. The ears are 52.3 and 49.2 mm. long. This eight weighs 323 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This is a poor example of a T–side eight. This eight is milled out of plate steel. No attempt was made to smooth any of the resulting sharp edges or corners. As is, it can easily damage rope. The side horns are a nice, albeit unnecessary feature for tying off. The eye is too narrow to accept two full size locking carabiners. This eight is too heavy for my taste.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Artyom Babin (Артём Бабин) in 2022.

This eight is made from one 10 mm. and one 12 mm. steel rod, each cut to length and bent to shape, and then welded to form the final shape before painting. It is 223 mm. tall, 168 mm. wide, and 12 mm. thick. The upper rope hole is 134 mm. high and 105 mm. wide. The inner hole is 106.8 mm. high and 88.1 mm. wide. The shaft length and width are 21 mm. and 19 mm., respectively. The eye measures 35 mm. by 28 mm. The ears are 74.4 and 63.5 mm. long. This eight weighs 644 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

According to Артём, "The man decided to get to work using rope access, and ordered a descender at the factory where he worked, 2021." This one was rusted when he received it. Not liking bare rusty metal, he removed the rust and added some black paint.

This eight is huge, rivaling the smaller Radeberger Haken. The divider bar in the middle greatly increases the rigging options, and the large horns on the side facilitate easy tie-offs. Despite its flexibility, it is simply too large and heavy for me to consider it as a caving or climbing eight. I'll leave this one to the rope access professionals.

I grouped this with the Welded Steel Figure Eights with Ears, although it could equally well be called a T–side eight.
