Technical Details

I acquired my PBI on eBay from Wild Gear Deals in 2022.

The PBI is milled from aluminum alloy and then hard anodized. Mine is 130 mm. tall, 735 mm. wide, and 12 mm. thick. The rope hole is 48 mm. high and 51 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 12 mm. The shaft length and width are 43 mm. and 23 mm., respectively. The eye measures 16 mm. by 31 mm. My PBI eight weighs 111 g.

The front of this eight is stamped with "PBI" inside an ellipse.

Comments

The PBI is a typical example of a "Flat Top" aluminum eight. It resembles the milled SMC Straight Eights, but the eye is a simple slot rather than the D-shaped eye found on the SMCs. This will cause the eight to ride to one side on the seat attachment, but who cares? The slot on the PBI is closer to the shape of a standard "Sticht" Plate slot than the eye found on the SMCs, but either one works for belaying.

Despite the color, the PBI finish is hard anodizing and should wear wears. The radius of the rounded edges is closer to half the plate diameter than the edges found on the SMCs, so there is less of a ridge to act as a wear concentrator.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
