Overview

History

Carroll Bassett sold equipment under the name "Vertical Supply" before switching to "Bassett Metal Studios (BMS)" in the mid-1990s.

Offset Eight Prototype, Version A
(#3293)

Front Rear

Technical Details

Carroll Bassett gave me this eight in 2023.

This eight is made from 14 mm. 304 stainless steel rod, bent and welded to shape. It is 168 mm. tall, 89 mm. wide, and 14 mm. thick. The rope hole is 57 mm. high and 62 mm. wide. The shaft length and width are 44 mm. and 16 mm., respectively. The eye is 41 mm. tall by 25 mm. wide. This eight weighs 510 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This is a flat welded steel rod figure eight. At more than half a kilogram, this eight is far too heavy for a normal eight.

Technical Details

Carroll Bassett gave me this eight in 2023.

This eight is made from 13 mm. 304 stainless steel rod, bent and welded to shape. It is 217 mm. tall, 86 mm. wide, and 13 mm. thick. The rope hole is 73 mm. high and 61 mm. wide. The shaft length and width are 75 mm. and 13 mm., respectively. The eye is 52 mm. tall by 30 mm. wide. This eight weighs 475 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This one is quite long and heavy for an eight, even a welded steel rod figure eight. While it will last for a very long time, it would take some special circumstances to justify the size and weight.

Technical Details

I acquired this eight from Chris Christensen in 2009.

This eight is made from 11 mm. 304 stainless steel rod, bent and welded to shape. It is 166 mm. tall, 72 mm. wide, and 11 mm. thick. The rope hole is 61 mm. high and 49 mm. wide. The shaft length and width are 43 mm. and 11 mm., respectively. The eye is 45 mm. tall by 24 mm. wide. This eight weighs 293 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

The Offset Eight was one of the few commercial welded steel rod figure eights. This eight is flat, while the Offset Eight LS and Offset Eight RS were arched. I don't see much practical difference between them.

Offset Eight LS, Version A
(#348)

Technical Details

InstructionsI acquired this eight from Vertical Supply in 1992.

This eight is made from 11 mm. 304 stainless steel rod, bent and welded to shape. It is 164 mm. tall, 71 mm. wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 62 mm. high and 51 mm. wide. The shaft length and width are 36 mm. and 11 mm., respectively. The eye is 46 mm. tall by 25 mm. wide. This eight weighs 292 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

The Offset Eight LS is one of the few commercial welded steel rod figure eights. There was no attempt to make the eight symmetrical - and no good reason to do so. The LS indicates that this is a left-handed, straight model. It is not apparent from the photo, but the eight is arched toward the viewer in the front view photo. The right-hand (RS) model is arched in the other direction.

Although it works well enough, the Vertical Supply Offset 8 LS is too heavy for my taste.

Technical Details

Carroll Bassett gave me this eight in 2023.

This eight is made from 11 mm. 304 stainless steel rod, bent and welded to shape. It is 169 mm. tall, 72 mm. wide, and 17 mm. thick. The rope hole is 62 mm. high and 50 mm. wide. The shaft length and width are 47 mm. and 11 mm., respectively. The eye is 45 mm. tall by 24 mm. wide. This eight weighs 297 g.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This version has a polished finish (produced by tumbling) as opposed to the matte finish (produced by bead blasting) of the previous version.

There are no markings on this eight.

Comments

This is another one of the few commercial welded steel rod figure eights. There was no attempt to make the eight symmetrical - and no good reason to do so. The LT indicates that this is a left-handed, twisted model. Like the LS, the LT is also too heavy for my taste. There was also an RT model that was a mirror of the LT.

This is another welded steel rod figure eight. This prototype is also quite long and heavy for an eight, even a welded steel rod figure eight. At nearly two-thirds of a a kilogram, this massive eight is far too heavy. While it will last for a very long time, it would take some special circumstances to justify the size and weight.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
