Technical Details

I acquired two of these eights from my father, Robert W. Storrick, in 1973.

The Storrick Stainless is bent from 316 stainless steel and then welded. Mine is 164 mm. tall, 73 mm. wide, and 12 mm. thick. The rope hole is 71 mm. high and 51 mm. wide. The top center thickness is 9 mm. The shaft length and width are 49 mm. and 19 mm., respectively. The eye measures 24 mm. by 23 mm. My eight weighs 243 g.

Comments

This is my first figure eight, a home made one fashioned out of stainless steel rod. It is heavy, but rugged. I grouped it with the other welded steel rod figure eights, but it has the defining characteristic of the "Flat Top" eights as well. It predates all other "Flat Top" eights in my collection, but SMC and the others certainly didn't copy the idea from me, as they never saw it. Actually, the pentagonal rope hole was not in my design, the smith just found it easier to make the upper hole pentagonal.

The Storrick Stainless is too heavy for my taste. This eight is undoubtedly quite strong. I used to worry about such things until I learned better.

We had enough sense not to use 304SS because of its carbon migration problem when hot formed.
