I acquired my Mammut Rotor Rotation Gate Carabiner from Moosejaw.com in 2010. I acquired another in 2017 as part of Bob Thrun’s collection.
My Mammut Rotor Rotation Gate Carabiner is 93 mm. long, 124 mm. wide, 28 mm. high, and weighs 509 g. It consists of a massive pear-shaped steel forging with one open side, front and rear cover plates, a rotating element with thee arms, and a latching spring.
The front is printed with "MAMMUT," the Mammut logo, an arrow indicating the rotation direction, "EN 362:2004," "D" inside a circle, "20 kN," a double-ended vertical arrow, a book-with-an-"i" icon, and "CE0123." The rear is printed with "MAMMUT," the Mammut logo, and an arrow indicating the rotation direction. The forging is stamped "06/09."
The Rotor Rotation Gate Carabiner by Mammut is designed for lead climbing in climbing gyms. The patented locking mechanism prevents unintentional slippage. There is a lot of web traffic suggesting that the device is dangerous because the rotor only rotates in one direction, but apparently the writers have never tried one, since the spring tab on the front can be raised to allow reverse rotation. Overall, though, I prefer more conventional gear, even in climbing gyms. This device is far too heavy and specialized for field use.
