Technical Details

I acquired my On Rope 1, Standard Double box from On Rope 1 at the 1996 Old Timers Reunion.

My On Rope 1, Standard Double box is 77 mm. long, 200 mm. wide, 54 mm. high, and weighs 465 g. It is a double channel chest box consisting of an aluminum back plate with two Simmons Rollers attached by passing an aluminum bar through the roller slots, and then bolting the bar to the back plate. Rectangular holes in the back plate provide clearance for the Simmons Roller shells. The back plate has 51 mm. tall vertical slots for attaching the box to a chest strap and 25 mm. wide horizontal slots for attaching shoulder straps.

Each Simmons Roller is stamped "SIMMONS." The quick release pins are each stamped with "AVK 55207."

Comments

This is a solid design, but it is also the heaviest commercial chest box in my collection.

Technical Details

I acquired my On Rope 1, Lightweight Double, Version A box from On Rope 1 at the 1997 Old Timers Reunion.

My On Rope 1, Lightweight Double, Version A is 76 mm. long, 200 mm. wide, 54 mm. high, and weighs 315 g. The back plate has 50 mm. tall vertical slots for attaching the box to a chest strap and 26 mm. wide horizontal slots for attaching shoulder straps. The design is similar to the Standard Double box, except that the back plate has been skeletonized to save weight.

Each Simmons Roller is stamped "SIMMONS." The quick release pins are each stamped with "AVK 55207."

Comments

Skeletonizing the back plate eliminated one third of the weight of the Standard Double; unfortunately, there is no corresponding reduction in bulk.

Bruce Smith from On Rope 1 sent me this Lightweight Double plate in 2009. On Rope 1 no longer had any Simmons rollers (my long-time friend Ron Simmons had died cave diving a few years earlier) so I acquired the attached Simmons rollers from Howie’s Harnesses at the 2009 Old Timers Reunion. I acquired another in 2017 as part of Bob Thrun’s collection.

The On Rope 1, Lightweight Double, Version B is 203 mm. tall, 76 mm. wide, 55 mm. thick, and weighs 326 g. with rollers attached.

The front and back are engraved "On Rope 1."

Comments

The differences between Version B and A are mainly cosmetic. Version B has one less lightening hole and is, consequently, slightly heavier.

Quality control defectI acquired my On Rope 1, Lightweight Double, Version C box from Bill Liebman at the 2017 Old Timers Reunion.

My On Rope 1, Lightweight Double, Version C is 203 mm. wide, 76 mm. high, 55 mm. thick, and weighs 317 g.

The front and back are engraved "On Rope 1." The Simmons Roller shells are stamped "SIMMONS."

Comments

Version C is a quality control reject that was never sold to anyone. It has the original straight rollers but the Simmons Roller shells are the ones sized for the U-groove rollers, so the bushings are not supported.

Warning:
This box was assembled from mismatched parts.
It is not safe to use.

Unassembled plateI acquired my On Rope 1, Lightweight Single box from On Rope 1 at the 1996 Old Timers Reunion. I acquiredd a set of plates for making another from Bill Liebman at the 2017 Old Timer’s Reunion.

My On Rope 1, Lightweight Single is 76 mm. long, 201 mm. wide, 54 mm. high, and weighs 195 g. It is a single channel chest box, very similar to the Lightweight Double except for having only one roller.

The Simmons Roller is stamped "SIMMONS." The quick release pins are each stamped with "AVK 55207." The plates have no markings.

Comments

If your system does not require a double roller, this box can save nearly 40% of the weight when compared to the Lightweight Double; however, the bulk remains comparable.
