Altitude Equipment is an Australian firm that made some interesting plastic nuts starting in 1998. Sadly, these colorful pieces failed to attract climbers, and disappeared from the climbing scene.
The Altitude Equipment nuts are not as light as you might think, but they are stronger than they look. In my mind, their primary disadvantage is that the soft plastic (that is, soft compare to metals) allows them to deform under load, which can make them difficult to remove.
