Overview

Wanted  Wanted  Wanted

Although I have quite a few variations of the Salewa Sticht Plate, I do not have the three variations illustrated on the instructions that came with the first one that I acquired. Two of these also appear on a page from the early 1970s Snell Sport Chamonix catalog that Carlo Bellestrero sent me, so I assume that these are 1970-1972 vintage. If you can help me acquire any of these for this collection, please email me.

9/9, Version A
(#812)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate used from S. Koch in 2005.

The Salewa Sticht, 9/9, Version A is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 66 mm. tall, 66 mm. wide, and 10 mm thick. The slots are 27.1 mm. long and 12.6 mm. wide. This Sticht plate weighs 64 g.

There is a circumferential groove in the side of plate, and the groove is sheared and crimped closed over about one-fourth the circumference.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 mm.Doppelseil," "Sticht Bremse D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA" and "[illegible]n West Ger[illegible]"

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 9/9, Version A is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. This one also features two slots for 9 mm. rope.

The circumferential groove follows the same pattern used to retain the spring in the Salewa Sticht (/w spring), 9/11, Version A. Marks inside the groove suggest that this 9/9 may have once had a spring, which would have been removed or lost by a previous owner. Other marks on the top suggest that if may also have once held a small bracket similar to the Salewa Sticht (/w spring), 9/11, Version A as well, but there are no marks in other places to confirm this.

9/9, Version B
(#851)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate from Jayme Trombly in 2007.

The Salewa Sticht, 9/9, Version B is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 61 mm. tall, 61 mm. wide, and 10 mm thick. The slots are 27.1 mm. long and 12.5 mm. wide. This Sticht plate weighs 65 g.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 mm.Doppelseil," "Sticht Bremse D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 9/9, Version B is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. This one also features two slots for 9 mm. rope. Version B is not completely round - it has four flat sides, giving it a quasi-octagonal shape. There is no circumferential groove, so I am certain that this one never had a spring.

9/9, Version C
(#1748)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired my Salewa Sticht, 9/9, Version C from Brian Bowness in 2012.

Version C is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 66 mm. long, 66 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 70 g. The slots are 29 mm. long and 12.7 mm. wide.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 mm.Doppelseil," "Sticht Bremse D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

Version C is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. It resembles Version A but lacks the circumferential groove, so this one certainly never had a spring.

9/11, Version A
(#790)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate from Mike Adams in 2003.

The Salewa Sticht, 9/11 is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 67 mm. tall, 67 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. One slot is 26.8 mm. long and 12.5 mm. wide, and the other is 32.0 mm long and 14.7 mm. wide. This Sticht plate weighs 61 g.

There is a circumferential groove in the side of plate, and the groove is sheared and crimped closed over about one-fourth the circumference.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 11mm Sticht," "Doppelseilbremse," "SALEWA" and "[illegible]de in West Germany."

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 9/11 is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. This one also features different size slots for 9 mm and 11 mm. rope.

The circumferential groove follows the same pattern used to retain the spring in the Salewa Sticht (/w spring), 9/11, Version A. Marks inside the groove suggest that this 9/11 may have once had a spring, which would have been removed or lost by a previous owner. Other marks on the top suggest that it may also have once held a small bracket similar to the Salewa Sticht (/w spring), 9/11, Version A as well, but there are no marks in other places to confirm this.

9/11, Version B
(#1679, 2807)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired one Salewa Sticht, 9/11, Version B from Harald Müller in 2010 and another from Robert Gould in 2021.

Version B is 66 mm. long, 66 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 64 g. It has two slots that are 27 and 32 mm. long.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 11mm Sticht," "Doppelseilbremse DBPa," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

Version B does not have the circumferential groove that Version A has. The finish on Version B is different than the others.

9/11, Version C
(#1700)

Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired my Salewa Sticht, 9/11, Version C from Thomas Kopp in 2010.

Version C is 63 mm. long, 63 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 55 g. It has two slots that are 28 and 33 mm. long.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 11mm Sticht," "Do[illegible]Pa," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

Version C is smaller than Version B, there are differences in the markings, and the markings are on the other side of the plate.

9/11, Version D
(#1704)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired my Salewa Sticht, 9/11, Version D from Sidney Evans in 2010.

Version D is 65 mm. long, 66 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 63 g. It has two slots that are 27 and 33 mm. long.

One side of the plate is stamped "9 11mm Sticht," "Doppelseilbremse DBPa," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

Versions B and D are similar, but the markings and finish are different. The edges are also different, suggesting a change in the manufacturing process. Version B appears to be stamped from both sides, while Version D appears to have been punched from a single side.

11, Version A
(#1712, 2719)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired two Salewa Sticht, 11, Version A plates from Thomas Cravens in 2011, and another from Tom O’Connor in 2017.

Version A is 34 mm. long, 67 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 39 g. It has one slot that is 33 mm. long. There are four peripheral 6.5 mm. holes for accessory cord.

One side is stamped with "11 mm. Sticht Seilbremse," "D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA," and "Made in West Germany."

Comments

These are probably the oldest sticht plates in my collection, and likely date from the early 1970s.

11, Version B
(#891)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate from Jim Chaney in 2007.

The Salewa Sticht, 11 is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 64 mm. tall, 64 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. It has one slot that is 30.6 mm. long and 15.0 mm. wide This Sticht plate weighs 76 g.

One side of the plate is stamped "11mm Sticht Seilbremse," "D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 11 is a normal forged single-rope Sticht plate. There is no circumferential groove, so I am certain that this one never had a spring.

Having only a single slot results in a heavier plate, and eliminates some operational flexibility, without any compensating advantages.

11, Version C
(#1678)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired my Salewa Sticht, 11, Version C from Harald Müller in 2010.

Version C is 63 mm. long, 63 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 69 g. It has one slot that is 30 mm. long.

One side of the plate is stamped "11mm Sticht Seilbremse," "D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

The details of the markings differ from Version B, the edges on this one are much more rounded, and the finish is different.

Technical Details

I acquired this Salewa Sticht from Edward Riguis in 2023.

This version is 61  mm. long, 61 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 66 g. It has one slot that is 30 mm. long.

One side of the plate is stamped "11mm Sticht Seilbremse," "D.B.P.a.," "SALEWA" and "made in West Germany."

Comments

This plate is similar to Version B, but the markings are on the opposite side as those on Versions B and C.

(#621)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate in 1974, but I don't have a record of from whom. I acquired a second from Tom Smith in 2021.

The Salewa Sticht, 11/11 is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 61 mm. tall, 61 mm. wide, and 10 mm. thick. The slots are 33.0 mm. long and 14.8 mm. wide. This Sticht plate weighs 54 g.

The plate is stamped "11mm Sticht," "Doppelseilbremse DBPa," "SALEWA," and "made in West Germany."

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 11/11 is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. This one also features two slots for 11 mm. rope. It is not completely round - it has four flat sides, giving it a quasi-octagonal shape. There is no circumferential groove, so I am certain that this one never had a spring.

11/11, Version B
(#2852)

Front Rear
Front Rear

Technical Details

I acquired my Salewa Sticht, 11/11, Version B from Ron H. Clementi in 2021.

Version B is forged from aluminum alloy. Mine is 65 mm. long, 65 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 61 g. It has two slots that are 30 mm. long.

The plate is stamped "11mm Sticht," "Doppelseilbremse DBPa," "SALEWA," and "made in West Germany."

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 11/11 is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. This one also features two slots for 11 mm. rope. There is no circumferential groove. It does not have the satin finish provided by the vibratory tumbler that Version C has.

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate from CarolJo Rushin-Elron at the 2016 NSS Convention. I acquired a second on eBay from Jeff Marksz in 2017

The Salewa Sticht, 11/11, Version C is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 64 mm. long, 64 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 58 g. It has two slots that are 33 mm. long and 14.8 mm. wide.

The two "stones" wedged in the one slot are polishing media for a vibratory tumbler, used to give the plates their final satin finish. I didn't have the heart to remove them.

Technical Details

I acquired this Sticht plate from Keith S. Bramer in 2022.

The Salewa Sticht, 11/11, Version C is forged from aluminum alloy. It is 62 mm. long, 62 mm. wide, 9 mm. thick, and weighs 50 g. It has two slots that are 31 mm. long and 15 mm. wide.

The plate is stamped "11mm Sticht," "Doppelseilbremse DBPa" at the top, with the first line faint enough to be illegible under normal light. The bottom is stamped "SALEWA," and "made in West Germany." The crossbar is stamped with "L & P" in inverted text, using a different font. The "P" is difficult to make out, and may be an "F."

Comments

The Salewa Sticht, 11/11 is a normal forged double-rope Sticht plate. This one also features two slots for 11 mm. rope. There is no circumferential groove.

The "L & P" stamp appears to be original, but I cannot be certain.
