Technical Details

I acquired my SBCI Belay Spool from Todd Paris in 2007.

The SBCI Belay Spool is 145 mm. tall, 76 mm. wide, and 84 mm. thick. Mine weighs 848 g. The spool is a 63.5 mm (2-1/2 in) hard-anodized aluminum cylinder with two 801 mm stainless steel roll pins that act as rope guides. The side plates are 4.7 mm. anodized aluminum bolted to the spool with 5/16 in (~8 mm.) hex cap screws. Each side plate has a slot and a second bolt and washer passing through a slot and into the spool. This arrangement limits the amount that the two plates can pivot to 50°, for a total of 100° with respect to each other. Although not strictly necessary, it does make the spool somewhat easier to rig.

The side plate with the slot is stamped "S.B.C.I."

Comments

The SBCI Belay Spool uses a hard-anodized aluminum drum while the Bassett Metal Studios Belay Spool’s drum is unfinished aluminum and the Single Rope Technique uses stainless steel. Although I see I see no compelling reason to recommend one over the other, I think that the SBCI takes a very reasonable middle-of-the-road approach.

Hundreds of cell phone users complained and asked me to for a simpler, mobile friendly site. In particular, they wanted me to limit each page to a small number of pictures and minimize my use of text. This new site provides what they asked for.
