Overview

Version A
(#3536)

Front

Technical Details

I don't have a record of when I made this ascender, but it was before 1982.

Version A is 35 mm. long, 34 mm. wide, 10 mm. thick, and weighs 22 g.

Comments

I read about the Salewa ascender long before I was able to obtain one, so I fashioned one out of 1/4-inch aluminum. Version A is larger than the original, and should be used with larger slings.

Version B
(#259)

Front

Technical Details

I made six of these in 2008.

Version B is 31 mm. long, 26 mm. wide, 7 mm. thick, and weighs 11 g.

Comments

Some good friends that I’d never met were asking about the Salewa ascender, so I made a batch of them in September 2008. I used the original Salewa ascender as a pattern. This time I had a milling machine available, so the end product looks better as well.

Version C
(#3442)

Front

Technical Details

I made twelve of these in 2021.

Version C is 29 mm. long, 25 mm. wide, 6 mm. thick, and weighs 9 g.

Comments

Using thinner aluminum allowed me to reduce the weight considerably compared to Version B.

I am not satisfied with this version, as the hole for the cord is too close to the slot. When I made these, I drilled the holes before maching the slot, and I had to angle the slot to provide clearance with the hole.

The matte finish if from placing these in a vibratory tumbler with porcelain media and running it overnight.

Version D
(#3443)

Front

Technical Details

I made sixteen of these in 2021.

Version D is 31 mm. long, 25 mm. wide, 6 mm. thick, and weighs 9 g.

Comments

This version works well, but it is longer than it needs to be. I think it could be 5 mm. shorter, which would result in a significant weight and bulk savings on what is already a tiny, light ascender that weighs 24% less than the Salewa ascender that it emulates.

Version E
(#3533)

Front

Technical Details

I made fourteen of these in 2022.

Version D is 31 mm. long, 25 mm. wide, 6 mm. thick, and weighs 8 g.

Comments

I made another batch for handouts, and took the opportunity to reduce the outrageous weight to somethin more manageable, knocking 7% off the weight of the previous version.

Efficiently rounding the other corners would require making a custom milling cutter.
