Royal Robbins distributed Alpélit through its first company, Mountain Paraphernalia in Modesto, California. These were the first aluminum handled ice axes in the USA. The Alpélit brand was created by Leborgne & Cie, metalworkers since the time of Emile Leborgne in 1829, in Savoy (Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia) at Pont de Bens in the commune of Arvillard.
Michel Lozac’hmeur, technical director of Leborgne, was an avid mountaineer. One day, while he was supposed to be climbing in the Mont Blanc massif with a guide, bad weather forced them to retreat to an ice climbing school in Les Bossons. During this session, an ice axe blade broke. After a quick analysis, he understood that the breakage was due to a forging problem that he knew how to solve. His brother Yvon was also a mountaineer, and wanted to diversify Leborgne's production, and mountaineering equipment was one opportunity they considered.
Always on the lookout for new technologies, Michel Lozac’hmeur considered the possibility of an aluminum handle to solve the problem of wooden handles breaking. A study showed aluminum's technical feasibility but prohibitive cost for most products; however, the cost could be justified for ice axes. The first design drawing was made in December, 1971, and the first Alpélit axes appeared the following year.
