Gerry Cunningham (1922-2010) was an avid outdoorsman from Colorado and a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division. He started making and selling outdoor equipment in 1946, initially as a mail order business. In 1958, Gerry opened the first of its retail stores, in Boulder, Colorado. The company expanded and branched out into other markets. In 1971, Cunningham resigned from the company, saying it was "too big and no fun." The company went through several owners, and continues as a clothing and backpack company to this day.
