Gendarme
(ジャンダルム頂上)
Ice Axes & Ice Hammers

There are no stampings on the head of this axe and the maker is unknown. The overall construction, balance, and distinctive oversized head suggest a classic mid-twentieth century alpine tool. This axe resembles my Ridge axe in many respects, but there are also enough differences to cast doubt on a common origin.

The most distinctive feature is the burn mark on the shaft reading "Gendarme Summit." We do not know if this mark was original or whether it was added by one of the axe's owners. The Gendarme is a famous and highly exposed rock ridge in the Hotaka range of the Northern Japanese Alps. It is one of the most challenging and iconic alpine routes in Japan, known for its technical difficulty and dramatic terrain. Among mountaineers, it represents a symbol of advanced climbing and achievement. We do not know whether this exact piece was used on that route.
