Technical Details

I acquired my Mammut Bionic Alpine Belay from CampSaver.com in 2017.

My Mammut Bionic Alpine Belay is 88 mm. long, 38 mm. wide, 71 mm. high, and weighs 76 g. It consists of two cast stainless steel pieces and a central aluminum plate riveted between two aluminum side plates. One of the pieces has two V-notches for the main line and a small accessory eye. Each V-notch has an internal rib on each side. These are offset to give a slight dogleg to the rope path. The other stainless piece provides a smooth running surface. The central plate has a 19 mm. round eye at the side opposite the V-grooves, and a 37 mm. by 37 mm. irregular hole below the rope channels.

Each side plate is printed with a rigging illustration an "MAMMUT." The rigging illustration is continued by a hand holding a rope etched into each side of the notched steel cross-piece. One side of the central plate is printed with a carabiner icon and a filled triangle pointing toward the large hole, a book-with-an-"i" icon, "Ø7.5-10.5 mm," and "EN15151-2 UIAA." The other side of the central plate is printed with a carabiner icon and a filled triangle pointing toward the large hole, a carabiner with attached ring icon and a filled triangle pointing toward the round eye, and "BIONIC ALPINE BELAY 11-15."

Comments

The Mammut Bionic Alpine Belay reminds me of the Petzl Reverso, but with the Bionic Alpine, rope runs over steel steel blocks rather than the edge of an aluminum stamping. This alone is sufficient to make the Bionic Alpine a much superior device in my mind, and the addition of V-grooves to increase friction is a second significant improvement. Finally, the Bionic Alpine is lighter than the Reverso.

Technical Details

I acquired my Mammut Eiger from Eric Goodell in 2026. It was made in June, 2021.

My Mammut Eiger is 87 mm. long, 37 mm. wide, 71 mm. high, and weighs 75 g.

Each side plate is printed with a rigging illustration. One side plate is also printed with "MAMMUT" and the other with "EIGER" and a stylized "X." The rigging illustration is continued by a hand holding a rope etched into each side of the notched steel cross-piece. One side of the central plate is printed with a carabiner icon and a filled triangle pointing toward the large hole, a book-with-an-"i" icon, "Ø7.5-10.5 mm," and "EN15151-2 UIAA." The other side of the central plate is printed with a carabiner icon and a filled triangle pointing toward the large hole, a carabiner with attached ring icon and a filled triangle pointing toward the round eye, "BIONIC ALPINE BELAY", a factory icon, and "06-2021."

Comments

The Mammut Eiger has thinner side plates than the Mammut Bionic Alpine Belay, but the difference (about 0.06 mm.) is not significant.&
