Joseph Charlet designed his first ice axe in 1880. A great trade name was born which carried the Charlet name through the generations. Charlet started making pitons in the 1950s. In 1960 Gerald Moser joined existing chief Germain Charlet to form the firm Charlet-Moser. Petzl acquired Charlet-Moser in 2000.
